Atlantic City Airshow "Thunder over the Boardwalk" Wednesday, August 19, 2009

The heart-stopping feats, aerobatics maneuvers, formation flying and solo routines of the Atlantic City Air Show "Thunder Over the Boardwalk" presented by Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa will guarantee that Wednesday, August 19, from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., won’t be your usual day at the beach.

Putting the thunder into "Thunder Over The Boardwalk" will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, along with the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights, Marines, N.J. Air National Guard, Coast Guard, civilian aircraft, and many more. Aircraft will reach up to 15,000 feet and as low as 50 feet over the water in front of the Atlantic City skyline.

Along with the Thunderbirds and the Golden Knights, acts and returning demonstration teams from the military included the U.S. Air Force-ACC F-22 Raptor, Air National Guard 177th Fighter Wing F-16 Fighting Falcon, NJ State Police S-76A+ and Bell 206 demonstration, U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet, FAA William J Hughes Technical Center Global 5000, U.S. Coast Guard HH-65 search and rescue demonstration, U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight, U.S. Air Force-AFRC C-130 Hercules four-ship flyby, and many more.

Civilian demonstrations included the Red Eagles Air Sports and the Horsemen P-51 team. The Horsemen three-ship P-51 demonstration team is the world's only P-51 Mustang formation aerobatic team. Other civilian demonstrations include Tim Weber GEICO Extra 300 Aerobatics, Rob Holland MX2 Aerobatics, and Jim Beasley Jr. Spitfire Aerobatics. Signifying the beginning of the show will be a flyby from the Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield Blimp of N.J.

The Atlantic City Airshow "Thunder over the Boardwalk" presented by Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is free to the public. However, for those looking for a front row seat, Flight Line Club tickets are available to purchase. Tickets cost $20 each and include a seat, choice of one hamburger or hot dog, one drink, and one bag of chips. For children under 12 years of age, admission is free but a seat and meal are not included. Food and beverage is also available a la carte. The Flight Line Club, hosted by Siganos Management, is located on the beach at Florida Avenue. Tickets may be purchased by calling 609-646-2292, extension 25.

There are several designated areas for parking in Atlantic City for the Airshow. Early arrivers may want to try the South Jersey Transportation Authority lots on Fairmont Avenue and Atlantic Avenue, and the parking garage on New York Avenue between Atlantic and Pacific. However, remote parking at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is highly recommended. Borgata is easily accessible from the Exit 1 off the Atlantic City Expressway through the Atlantic City Connector. Visitors should look for directional signs in the surface lot. If you park in the garage, walk through the casino to the North Entrance to take the shuttle. Parking will be $5, which includes the cost of the shuttle to the Boardwalk.

Those wishing to view the airshow from the ocean are welcome, but should be aware that there will be a "no boat zone" restricting boaters except for the U.S. Coast Guard, police and other marine units, from approaching too close to the Atlantic City beach.

Those coming to the show are encouraged to wear light clothing, apply sunscreen, and bring bottled water, sunglasses, and radios to tune into AM 1400 WOND for the Atlantic City Airshow broadcast or Lite Rock 96.9 WFPG for Gary Guida’s broadcast from the Boardwalk. You’ll also hear call-ins on Cat Country 107.3, ESPN-FM 97.3, WZXL 100.7, WAYV 95.1, WMGM The Shark, WTKU Kool 98.3 and WJSE 102.7. Younger children may also find ear plugs beneficial due to the close proximity of the aircraft.

The Atlantic City International Airport is the host airport for the Atlantic City Airshow. While the majority of airshow performers take off and land via the airport, the Atlantic City Airshow takes place over the beach and Boardwalk in Atlantic City.

Presented by Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, the Atlantic City Airshow "Thunder Over The Boardwalk" is a community partnership between the Greater Atlantic City Chamber; the 177th Fighter Wing of the N.J. Air National Guard; South Jersey Transportation Authority; FAA William J. Hughes Tech Center; The Atlantic City International Airport; David Schultz Airshows, LLC; the City of Atlantic City; and the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority.
