The Atlantic City Boardwalk Honors America’s Heroes

The Boardwalk Business Committee is working to bring special events to the boardwalk… events that elevate the branding of the Boardwalk and honor its history.  This spring the committee is hosting a special night of pomp and circumstance to honor “Camp Boardwalk” and  New Jersey’s WWII veterans. The Atlantic City Boardwalk Honors America’s Heroes is hosted by The Greater Atlantic City Chamber and NJ’s WWII Commission to raise funds for a WWII Memorial.  A portion of the funds will also go The Chamber to host other Boardwalk events.

Special invited guests include The Honorable Jon Corzine and Yogi Berra, who himself is a WWII veteran from New Jersey. Plus, New Jersey’s own widely-popular Joe Piscopo will perform live with an Orchestra conducted by Vincent Falcone.  The program will include a special patriotic salute to NJ’s WWII vets and Camp Boardwalk.

Camp Boardwalk existed from 1942 to 1946.  Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the U.S. Army was in dire need of a military base.  The Atlantic City Boardwalk was a ready made camp and The War Department took over the Boardwalk and its 45 hotels.  In the summer of 1942, the beachfront resort was transformed into a basic training and medical care center.  Convention Hall, the largest structure of its kind at the time, served as the headquarters for the Army’s Basic Training Center No. 7.  Haddon Hall, now Resorts, became the country’s largest military hospital.  This transformation of our seaside resort during WWII became known as “Camp Boardwalk.”  The Event Invitation follows:
