Chairman's Message

Chairman Paul Gallagher

Dear Friends,

It’s been a long election season, but it will be over soon. It’s been a long baseball season, and I hate to see it come to an end.

This has been a tough year with the credit crunch, the slow economy, the business downturn. We enter the Holiday season with more trepidation than anticipation. Even here, with what was supposed to be a recession proof industry, we look at each day’s headlines with growing concern about exactly where the leading economic indicators are leading us.

In circumstances like this, in times like this, it is important to remember your core. Who are you; why are you in business; what, exactly, is your business? It is important to remember the people who helped you get where you are today, and to be loyal to those relationships now that they might be needing you. And it is a time where your membership in the Chamber can take on a new value, when the strength of our business community acting together is so much stronger than might be our weakest links.

In the weeks remaining before the New Year, we will see the election of a new President and a new Mayor. Both men will take office is in the midst of great crises and great opportunities. We will have Change, no matter who is elected, and it is important that we have Change for the better. As a business community, we must be prepared to serve as an agent of change, if only because the status quo is such a quagmire.

I hope you will turn to your Chamber in these times of business uncertainty. It’s not just cocktails and glad-handing, not to diminish the importance of either. It’s forging new relationships, finding new solutions, identifying new customers. Come out to an after-hours, or come learn about the new affordable housing plans and how they will affect all of us, or join us to hear what Speaker Roberts has to say at the installation of officers. Trust me, you’ll find someone who has an answer to your question, or a product you’ve been looking for, or a need your company can service.

And until then, be thankful for a long baseball season. Go Phils!
